Sewing for the Lord

Stitched with prayer to reflect God’s glory and beauty

Deep Purple

I’ve been challenged by keeping the lines straight and the distances equal, by fabric deciding to make its own shape for my vestments, but nothing prepared me for what I experienced making the purple and pink vestments. Both are made from the same triple crepe fabric which has a lovely stone texture, rich colours and simply flows. This sounds gorgeous and it looks gorgeous, but it also means that it literally flows when you try to keep it flat and still while cutting. In this process, I moved from using scissors and cutting on the table to rotary cutter and huge cutting mats on the floor. I also wouldn’t do without some of best sewing companions – wonder clips and hundreds of them!

  • Unfinished purple vestment with clipped hem

One Sunday in Advent, I talked to someone after Mass. She didn’t know that I made the vestments. Here is what she said:

“When I saw the silver cross on the purple vestment, I was speechless. It looked like it was radiating some kind of light from within. The simplicity of the design is so powerful that it made me cry and I couldn’t take my eyes away from it.”
